As you’ll all be aware, the wearing of face masks is increasingly being promoted by all the UK Governments and Assemblies – for example, the wearing of face masks in shops will generally be mandatory in England from Friday 24th July. You can find the full details here for England (together with links to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) but there are several exemptions to this rule. These exemptions include young children under the age of 11 and importantly also people “not being able to put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability.”

For individuals or families who meet these criteria, they may still find they are challenged as to why they aren’t wearing a mask by police, shop workers or even other members of the public. That’s why we thought some families might find the below information sheet from our colleagues at The Challenging Behaviour Foundation useful. It is aimed to help those with a Severe Learning Disability and contains printable cards which the person can carry with them and show to anyone to explain why they are exempt from wearing a mask.
